Career Grade Planner  (Transport Planner)

Islington is an exciting and dynamic part of London experiencing rapid growth and undergoing a transformation in its transport environment. To meet these challenges, create a high quality built environment, and to respond to the changing demands in the way people travel, we are working with Transport for London and neighbouring boroughs on an ambitious programme to improve conditions for our residents, by improving our neighbourhoods, streets and public spaces. The successful candidate will be able to continue the delivery of the Council’s electric vehicle charging strategy and the delivery of the electric vehicle charging network.

The Council's Strategic Projects and Transport Planning Service sits at the heart of the Council’s response to these changes. The service plays a key role in creating better neighbourhoods, streets and public spaces that meet the needs of its local communities.  The successful candidate’s primary responsibility will be overseeing the planning and delivery of the electric vehicle charging network, engaging with key stakeholders and partners, managing funding, carrying out consultation and overseeing the delivery of infrastructure.  In addition to the delivery of the charging network, the successful candidate will be required to contribute to other areas of work within the Transport Planning team.

The successful candidate will be expected to have:

  • a broad understanding of transport planning policies, principles and issues;
  • an understanding of the requirements to deliver complex transport or public space projects;
  • experience in drafting responses to consultations on behalf of a local authority
  • experience of working within a recognised project management framework;
  • an ability to draft funding bids and lobby for investment;
  • an ability to provide expert advice to elected members, management and less experienced colleagues; and
  • a qualification in transport planning, highway engineering, urban design, town planning, regeneration, project management or a related discipline to degree level or equivalent with a proven track record of successful post-qualification practice.

The successful candidates must have very good communication skills and be able to work creatively and constructively within a team, with other parts of the Council and partner organisations. A crucial part of these roles will be an ability to work positively with stakeholders, the local community and elected members to deliver projects in line with the Council’s priorities.
